Candle Use and Safety in the Home
Thu 19 Dec 2019Dear Parents and Carers
As we are so very close to Christmas, I thought it would be helpful to share with you the following advice from the London Fire Brigade:
Peter Curtin, Bexley Borough Commander (Fire), Sidcup Fire Station:
‘Advice from the London Fire Brigade is to use flameless candles, aka LED, battery-operated, or electric candles. These have the advantage that they can be left unattended, you don't have to worry about children knocking them over and they can be used safely indoors.’
More guidance on candle safety can be found on the London Fire Brigade website or via below link:
https://www.london-fire.gov.uk/safety/the-home/candles/
The following important advice from Peter Curtin should be considered if clothing does catch fire:
If there's an accident with a candle and your clothes catch fire, don’t run. Try and remember ‘stop, drop, roll' – which means:
1. Stop – don’t run, you’ll make the flames worse
2. Drop – lie down on the ground at once
3. Roll – in heavy fabric or a fire blanket to smother the flames, though just on the ground will help
I sincerely hope no-one will ever need this advice but it is good to know and share.
In the meantime, may I wish you once again a truly lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Kind regards,
Mrs Davies
Principal
