Summer 1 term topic - I do like to be beside the seaside!

We wish you all a very Happy Easter and hope you get to enjoy some exciting Easter egg hunts. When we return to school the weather will hopefully be getting much warmer and we can begin to enjoy some sunshine and some longer days. This will link nicely to our topic 'I do like to be beside the seaside'. In English we will be listening to some lovely seaside stories and thinking about looking after the environment at the seaside. In maths we will continue to learn about the number system and think about how we can multiply and divide. We will be exploring the seaside in the past in our history lessons and will learn about a 'naughty' puppet. We will also get to make our own puppets!

We can't wait to see you back in school!

Mrs Cole and Mrs Mansfield

We have have had great fun taking part in a lego workshop! We were able to use our immagination and get creative in making vehicles. We also had some challenges set for us - to build a strong bridge and to make a tall tower. We found that working in a team and collaborating with others produced the best results!

In Art we have been exploring paintings with a seaside theme, painted in an impressionist style. Impressionism is a style of painting that shows natural appearances of objects or people by using thin small brush strokes, or dabs of paint to paint scenes of every day life. We have created our own impressionist style beach scenes.

In science we have been learning about everyday materials. We have carried out lots of investigations - one of our investigations was to find out what happens to different materials when they are heated. First we had to make a prediction and then we had to perform a test to observe what happens. These are the pictures of us being scientists!

Spring 1 term topic - Vroom Vroom

A big welcome back to Berlin class, it is good to be together again as the Berlin team! We have some have exciting activities planned to link to our topic of Vroom Vroom such as  making our own car in DT. As always, we will be busy learning and expanding our knowledge bank by listening to stories, reading, writing and working hard on our phonics. In maths we will be continuing to learn all about number and will also tackle some measuring. In science, we will be learning all about plants and will carry out our own investigation when we plant our cress seeds. It's going to be exciting and, as always, we are extremely proud to be working with you!

In Design Technology, we have been busy designing our own vehicles. We started by learning about cars and their different parts, we then labelled the parts of a car and then moved on to thinking about a design for our own vehicle. In the designing stage, we drew our plans on paper and also used a drawing programme on the computer. Hope you like some of our designs.

Once our designs were completed, we then started on the production process and had to start making our vehicle. This involved choosing a suitable cardboard box, thinking about colours, windows and doors and how to cut, join and combine materials safely. Here are some of our finished products!

This term we had a very exciting event happen at school. Some eggs were delivered in an incubator and were getting ready to hatch. This supported our learning in science, as we were able to learn about lifecycles and we were able to use our observation skills to observe the chicks hatch and to observe them grow. The best part was that we got to hold them. We loved it!

We have been lucky to have a special visitor this term who has introduced us to Chinese dragon dancing. We had great fun learning the dance, hearing some traditional Chinese stories and looking at the very colourful costumes.

Autumn 2

Autumn 2 has been a very busy half term for Berlin Class.  In history, we have been learning about the changes that have taken place in our local area over time and have thought about how we ourselves have changed. In computing we have had the opportunity to use BBC Dance Mat to enable us to type a message in a card and in DT we have planned our own cold dish and hot dish. The best part has been making our dishes and eating them! Now, we are looking forward to Christmas and have been enjoying Christmas themed activities in School.

Berlin Class deserve a well earned break from their hard work this half term. They should be proud of what they have achieved and they should be proud of the great effort they have put into their learning.  Well done to all of you!

Wishing you a fabulous break and some lovely family time together.

Autumn 2 term topic - Me, Myself and I

In Design and Technology, we have been thinking about healthy foods, how to keep safe when preparing food, including good hygiene and we have designed our own hot and cold dishes. For our hot dish, we planned a pizza and had to decide our toppings and for our cold dish, we planned a salad, or a fruit salad and had to decide on the different fruits or salad that we would incorporate into our dish. We then very much enjoyed the eating part of the process!

In English we really enjoyed our work based around the story 'Jamela's Dress' by Nikki Daly. As well as doing drama work and acting out the story, we were also able to do some cross-curricular work in art and we designed a special dress for Jamela.

In SMSC we have been learning how to care for our friends. In pairs we acted out a scenario where one of us felt really sad and needed to be cheered up.This enabled us to have a good discussion about ways of cheering others up and ways of recognising when others feel sad and need some support.

Autumn 1

Welcome to Year One! We hope you had a really fantastic holiday and are looking forward to your new adventures in year one. Throughout the year, we will be learning lots and having so much fun together. We know you will impress us with your outstanding attitudes to learning this year. This is our class page where we will post different pieces of your work/achievements from lots of different subjects. When you feel proud of something, please let us know, so that we can post it onto our page. Remember to keep visiting throughout the year to explore some of the hard work that you have completed. On our page, you can also see what we are going to be learning about in our topic brainstorm. You can access this page at home so if you would like to, you will also be able to share your learning with your grown-ups.

Welcome to Year One!

Autumn 1 term topic- Me, Myself and I

In PE, we have been doing gymnastics. We have been looking at wide, narrow and curved shapes, high and low movements. We have been exploring these shapes and movements through floor work and apparatus work.

We have been looking at the life of Mary Seacole and her important contribution to society. We then made our own statues to celebrate a person who is very important to us. We have been doing this for Black History Month which we celebrate in October but we also cover throughout the year through our focus on equality.

In computing we have been looking at 'We are TV cooks' this half term. We have been looking at recipes, TV chefs cooking online, qualities of a TV chef. We also learnt that we need to follow instructions to get things done. We had to write our own instructions for making a jam sandwich and learnt that they were called algorithms. We then used the video option on the I-Pads and practised recording, playing and pausing in small groups/pairs.
