Topic Brainstorms!
Me, Myself and I-Term 2.
In Term 2 we explored a range of fictional texts with a variety of different themes, always attempting to relate to our own experiences. These ranged from conventional traditional tales, variations with alternative themes to rhyming texts by Julia Donaldson and stories from different cultures. We used drama to deepen our understanding of the texts. This helped us to find relevant adjectives, as well as rehearse what we were going to write by saying it first. The children have written on a daily basis, beginning to learn how to plan, write and edit. Of course there is still a huge emphasis on decoding words, phrases and sentences for a range of different purposes.

Maths:
In Maths this term we have been exploring addition and subtraction, using a variety of different techniques. We have used number lines, number beads, cubes etc to help solve calculations practically. Then we recorded in number sentences. As well as this we explored calculations involving a missing number, so we have begun to learn about the inverse function. We have begun to decode word problems, attempting to write the chosen number sentence. Finally we went on to explore the properties of 2 and 3D shapes. We sorted them into categories of our own choosing, investigated shapes in the world around us by going on a shape hunt. Also we constructed our own 2 and 3D shapes.

Design and Technology:
This term we have learnt about the importance of understanding how to carefully and successfully prepare a cold dish, from planning it to making and evaluating it. We learnt about the importance of food hygiene and cleanliness when preparing food. In addition we carefully combined ingredients, learning how to chop safely using a child-friendly knife to cut with and how to hold the food we were chopping safely. We prepared our own fruit salad, learning about the benefits of healthy eating. Everyone agreed that this was something they would do again. Each person made something according to their own tastes and suitable for their own dietary requirements.

Welcome to Year 1!
It is our pleasure to welcome you and your child on their new learning journey this year. We are looking forward to sharing this with you all.
It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of Term 1 already. Although the children began with a combination of the EYFS and KS1 Curriculum, they are nicely transitioning into the Year 1 Curriculum. Of course there are some notable differences between the EYFS and KS1 Curriculums. The lessons are structured into separate subjects which allow the children to engage in a variety of hands on ways, but there is a greater emphasis on writing, reading and exploring mathematics on a daily basis, along with other timetabled subjects like science, art, geography, history, smsc/pshe/rshe spread throughout the week.
Berlin Class page will give you a snap-shot of these experiences throughout the year ahead. We hope you enjoy them!
Me, Myself and I-Term 1
Year 1 began English by reading and following directions. They used directional language which had cross-curricular links to our geography map-work.

We read and followed more instructions to make our fruit faces. Then we enjoyed eating them!

Maths
During Term 1 we investigated many aspects of number and place value. The children had the opportunity to investigate practically using a variety of different methods, then record their conclusions in books. We have counted up from zero in a variety of different values, seeing how high in value we could go.

Computing:
In Computing we learnt that Algorithms are sets of instructions fed into computers to help them follow required steps to achieve an outcome. We took it in turns to give our friends instructions to make jam sandwiches. Interestingly, we noticed that we had to break down these instructions into small units so we could achieve our objective.

Science:
In Science we have been learning about Animals, Including Humans. This involved comparing different species of animals, exploring senses, investigating habitats and survival tactics. We conducted several investigations and fair tests. Our eyes were covered while we tasted different food items, then we used suitable adjectives to describe the taste. This process was repeated for touch, smell and sound/hearing.
